Bosque School

Immersives

Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bosque School is an independent,

college-preparatory school deeply committed to Challenging Education. At Bosque

School, we are preparing today’s students to thrive in tomorrow’s world through

dynamic, engaging, and impactful educational opportunities. This commitment is

exemplified by the addition of a three-week immersive program—first launched in the

spring of 2022.

For three weeks in May, students participated in immersive courses designed to

ignite their passions, inspire their creativity, develop new skills, explore potential

career paths, and provide them with the opportunity to connect with each other and

the community through meaningful, real-world experiences. Led by a diverse team

of teachers and in collaboration with community partners, students went beyond the

four walls of the classroom to engage in transformative and interdisciplinary

educational experiences.

Students were given the opportunity to choose their immersive course from a

diverse selection of more than 20 classes that included everything from outdoor

education courses like Wilderness Studies and Mountain Medicine, to science

classes like Agua Es Vida, to art and performance classes like Mural Takeover and

Hot Cheetos, and ShowMakers.

Though the immersives themselves were as varied as the students who took them,

all of the courses seemed to have something in common—no matter whether

students were river rafting, painting a larger-than-life mural, identifying DNA from a

“crime scene,” filming a movie, or learning to speak Greek, students in every

immersive came away from their course with some compelling new skills and a

strengthened sense of community and belonging.

A 7th-grade student shared, “I liked that we would be able to learn something and

then DO it. That helped because I was remembering the memory, not the lesson.

That allowed me to keep what I learned with me.“

Another student expressed, “There was a lot more work than I anticipated. However, I

found myself learning a lot more than I have ever in this time span.”

One of our 11th graders felt, “The learning environment and takeaways were in-depth,

rigorous, and thought-provoking in a way that made me curious as well as

academically challenged.”

At the conclusion of immersives, Bosque School students and teachers invited

members of the community to a school-wide event where all 20 immersive groups

showcased their final projects. Their outstanding work is proof that some of the most

powerful learning does, indeed, happen outside of the classroom. Geetha

Holdsworth, academic dean, summed it up, “The dedicated engagement to learning

was palpable on our campus—from 6th grade through our seniors, students were

connecting with academic content in new and meaningful ways.”

Bosque School is deeply grateful to the E.E. Ford Foundation for their support of our

immersives program through a Challenge Grant, and to Nancy Croker and Joe

Gorvetzian, who provided a matching grant.
